Mission StatementFormerly known as Westchester, Putnam, Rockland Lactation Consortium Inc. We are now Tri-State Breastfeeding Association in order to be more inclusive to the areas that we serve. We are a voluntary group of health professionals organized in 1990 to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding in the tri-state area.
HistoryOn May 25, 1990, Debra Mosley from the NYS Dept of Health invited approximately 30 individuals who were involved in breastfeeding promotion and support to an organizational meeting. Goals and Objectives were defined and an Executive Committee was elected. From May to Sept, the executive committee held monthly meetings to plan general meeting educational programs and create a mailing list. The first general meeting was held on Sept 12, 1990 at White Plains Hospital. The topic was “Implementation of Breastfeeding Code” and the speakers were Lois Hazelton, RD, NYS Lactation Coordinator and Marta Baez, RD, NYS Dept of Health.
In August 1992, the consortium participated in World Breastfeeding Week creating a press release and supporting individual hospital projects. The first annual conference occurred on May 19, 1993. It was co-sponsored by the Division of Neonatal Medicine and the Westchester City Medical Center. In February, 1995, WPR officially became an ILCA affiliate. In September 1996, the steering committee was replaced by the Board of Directors and the consortium library was organized. November 1996 marked the first publication of The Gold Standard newsletter which was distributed to eleven breastfeeding networks. In July 1997, WPR joined the “Media Watch” campaign coordinated by NYC WIC breastfeeding promotion coordinator, Djamilla Samad. The Breastfeeding Resource Directory was mailed to pediatricians in the tri-county area in September 1998. WPR has continued to organize educational events for members and the community, participate in World Breastfeeding Week, and support local breastfeeding in the tri-state area. |
